Why Do We Say It?

Pull One's Leg.
What is the reason we say that one person joshing another is "pulling his leg"?

The allusion is to tripping up a man by catching at his foot or "pulling his leg". This, of course, makes the man fall---and to see a person fall is considered comic by all mankind. (Why Do We Say It? pg 197)

Only A Dad

Thought I'd post my favorite poem about fathers, for Fathers' Day.

Happy Fathers' Day to my wonderful father! Thank you for everything you've done everyday for me for my whole life. I love you so, so, so much!

Only A Dad.

Only a dad with a tired face,
Coming home from the daily race,
Bringing little of gold or fame
To show how well he has played the game;
But glad in his heart that his own rejoice
To see him come and to hear his voice.

Only a dad with a brood of four,
One of ten million men or more
Plodding along in the daily strife,
Bearing the whips and the scorns of life,
With never a whimper of pain or hate,
For the sake of those who at home await.

Only a dad, neither rich nor proud,
Merely one of the surging crowd,
Toiling, striving from day to day,
Facing whatever may come his way,
Silent whenever the harsh condemn
And bearing it all for the love of them.

Only a dad but he gives his all,
To smooth the way for his children small,
Doing with courage stern and grim
The deeds that his father did for him.
This is the line that for him I pen:
Only a dad, but the best of men.

Cape San Blas, Florida

Here's some pictures of our trip to the beach.
It was an amazing vacation and a great way to start the summer.

This is a picture my brother took of the dunes.

This was when we first got there. . . Isabelle wasn't quite sure what to think about all that wind :-P

This is me going out to do some boogie boarding :P

She loves looking at the world up-side-down :D

We were really silly that night. . . . :P

And that's me fishing. . . I fished a LOT while we were there.
I ended up catching 3 little sharks so it paid off :D

Why Do We Say It?

Cold Shoulder:
What is the origin of the phrase expressing disinterest, "give the cold shoulder"?

The allusion is to a shoulder of meat. A common way-farer stopping at a farmhouse and asking for a meal would probably be given cold food. And since the common food of early England was mutton, he would be "given a cold shoulder." (Why Do We Say It, pg 63)

Happy Birthday Isabelle!!

Wow....I haven't posted anything in quite a while. Sorry about that. I have been insanely busy, though, so I suppose that's a pretty good excuse. Just started violin lessons, had a very big church get together which we hosted at our house, trying to get my math and science done, rehearsals for the play I'm in, exams, of course, (ughhhh. . . :-P) And then right after exams, we packed up for a week at the beach. We went to Cape San Blas, Florida. It's a gorgeous white beach with clear, blue water, along the gulf. Not many people know about it, because it hasn't really been developed much, so you pretty much get the beach to yourself. It was sad to leave, but I'm also glad to be back home with my friends and my cousins.
But anyhow, while we were at the beach, my baby sister had her second birthday. On the 7th. She's growing up so fast........:(
I really don't know what we did for fun, before Isabelle came along :D She entertains all of us,  all the time :P

She's the cutest little sister EVER :D

Daddy's Girl

Enjoying her birthday cake. . . VERY much :)

This is what she does when you tell her to make a "silly face" :D

Happy Birthday to my precious little sister!! I love you,  Isabelle :D
