God Rest Us Merry.

"God rest ye merry, gentlemen
Let nothing you dismay..."

How is that even possible?

Just read the news. This world is a mess. We are those who "call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter." Woe to us.

We punish the good and pat the evil on the back, because we're tolerant like that. . . And we're proud of it, too. We broadcast it on the news, we sing it in our music, we write it in our stories. Trueness is old fashioned; something our grandmas did. Sort of like marriage and having babies. At this rate, we're going to become like something out of 1984. And that's scary. Really, really scary. Already, there are places in our world where, soon, the old will outnumber the young; the dying will exceed the being born. And we're not supposed to let it dismay us. We're not supposed to let any of it dismay us. We're supposed to be merry.

Fear not.

There's good news - and great joy. This is a world nearly covered with black spots, but it's a white world nevertheless. (Chesterton.) And this is only the mopping-up operation. The war has been won. "Leave it to God", says Sproul Jr, "to begin His greatest invasion with a baby in a backwater town in a backwater province and to win His greatest victory upon a cross."

Upon the ones that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them the light has shined, upon them is poured redemption. That's us. "Maybe it's a better thing to be more than merely innocent, but to be broken, then redeemed by love....Maybe this old world is bent, but its waking up." (Andrew Peterson).

God is not dead. Wrong will fail and Right will triumph. And there will be peace on earth and good will to men. For unto us is born this child. This baby. And His reign and His peace will never, ever end.

Merry Christmas! God bless us, everyone.
