All the Beauty of Life

“All the variety, all the charm, all the beauty of life is made up of light and shadow, "
- Leo Tolstoy, Anna Karenina

Part of the bargain of living is that you take the dark days, too. So live the shadows with as much courage as you live the sunshine.

A beautiful painting is the combination of many colors, many shades, many lights and darks.

A beautiful song is the combination of many sounds, many sad notes and happy notes and sharps and flats.

Without the shaded places, without the flat notes, there is nothing beautiful. There is only blank canvas or random noise.  Without the hard days - even the really really hard ones - there is no life at all. There is nothing lived, nothing fought for, nothing gained.

"Sometimes the stars decide to reflect in puddles in the dirt,"

Be ready to see that reflection in the muddiness and be glad of it, because it means He is making beautiful things. Be strong enough to understand that the shadows are His mercy. Be brave enough to keep your hands wide open. Don't clench your fists. Each chapter is different, each role is unique. Be ready to catch hold of whatever you may be given and be ready to wrestle with it. Give it everything you have and more. Know that the shadows all count, and that they all add up with the light, and that they equal something marvelous. All is made good in the end.
